Investee Detail
Emeritus Investee - Human Development Foundation
There are many gifted children who fall through the cracks - their intelligence, creativity, and potential go unrecognized or, if recognized, unfulfilled. They languish in classrooms where they become easily bored or frustrated, and in many cases, they are labeled as “troublemakers”. As they move into middle and high school, they are at risk for dropping out or engaging in dangerous activities that provide relief from the boredom or lack of inspiration that they experience in school. A disproportionately large percentage are from low-income families, representing a range of cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.
To address this issue, Human Development Foundation partnered with San Diego City Schools to launch OPEN GATE in 1998, and over the next six years the program expanded from ten children to five classrooms (100 children) in three schools. The district provides classrooms and OPEN GATE provides structure, tutors, training, and supplemental materials. OPEN GATE provides carefully trained college student tutors, school supplies, the cost of fieldtrips, and advocacy highly gifted students from low-income families.
